Security

The concept of "security policy", introduced for the first time in 1999, cannot be separated from the involvement of the entire "airport community" since it follows the principle according to which each actor is committed, guarantees and supports the implementation of an acceptable level of safety, according to national and international standards.

In this sense, all the bodies that operate permanently at the airport work for security and participate in security. Among these, Airgest SpA, as airport manager of Trapani Birgi airport, must ensure compliance with and application of the regulatory security requirements, relating to both infrastructures and operations, reported by the sector regulations.

In addition, in compliance with the provisions of the PNS ed. 2015, Chapter 1-Part A and previous international standards, Airgest has equipped the infrastructure with a special and identifiable separation between the airside areas and the security areas as well as electronic control systems to guarantee total control of the areas open to the public and the areas of the terminal reserved for passengers. Particular importance is also given to the protection and control of access and the related logistical/operational/management processes that call for the obligation to maintain security standards.

With this in mind, compliance with the national and international regulations in force on security and the related internal procedures constitute the handbook for all Airgest SpA employees who, thanks to recorded and widespread training, conduct their activities by striving to protect and promote security in every airport operation.

The safety policies followed by Airgest are formally expressed in the following general objectives:

  • the compliance of the airport infrastructures currently in place and those newly built with national and international standards; the latter both in terms of design/implementation and in terms of efficiency/effectiveness;
  • the drafting and continuous review of operating procedures, so that they are always compliant with national and international dictates, aimed at achieving security and operational efficiency;
  • the recurring training of personnel for each individual operational process, so that the activity carried out by each operator responds in order to the requirements of safety, regularity and quality of service;
  • the effective conduct of proactive corrective actions in order to eliminate or minimize risks;
  • the promotion of the culture of security and awareness of the need to give priority to security in every operational decision, without prejudice to the coordination and involvement in an increasingly broad manner between the various public and private airport subjects;
  • the involvement and use of the necessary resources to ensure the highest possible level of safety for the benefit of carriers and passengers transiting through the airport.

With the recent Decr. Interministerial no. 507/2012, moreover, Airgest has obtained a thirty-year contract for the total management. Pursuant to Ministerial Decree 85/99, it has become a concessionaire for security services with ENAC provision 0001435/DIRGEN/VDG of 10.01.2006 and ensures, in the field of airport security, the provisions of the legislation and consequent reference procedures.

In particular, the airport operator is the entity to which the laws and regulations assign, together with other activities, the task of administering and managing the airport infrastructures under assignment and of coordinating and controlling the activities of the various private operators present in the airport.

In accordance with Article 2 of Ministerial Decree 85/99, security services are assigned to a security company selected at the end of an appropriate public procedure.

This service is ensured by the presence, according to scheduled shifts, of specifically certified Security Guards (usually called GPGs) whose training is governed by national and EU regulations which, moreover, establish detailed provisions for the implementation of the common basic standards, in order to protect civil aviation from acts of unlawful interference that endanger its safety.

The organization of the GPG service is the task of the Technical Director of the security company: a professional figure who, in order to guarantee a control activity that allows the highest level of quality and safety to be achieved, always ensures the best coordination of the safety stations and the continuous presence of the employees of the stations during the operational activity of the airport, on the basis of the programming required by the operator.
